Webstock '08 Review - Part 5 →
Breakfast with yr web idols was too early for me at 7:30am so Friday started with Russell Brown and Tales from the Content Side. This was not the advertised presentation. Russell covered how media writes stories as if there is no history. A statistic can be described as alarming when in context to the same statistic 6 months ago a substantial improvement can be seen. This does reinforce my...

Webstock '08 Review - Part 4 →
I’m currently reading Managing Humans: Biting and Humorous Tales of a Software Engineering Manager by Michael Lopp. There’s a lot to take in with it, so I’m only reading one section at time. Michael presented Primal Software Development. It made me want to found a start up.
One of the important things to do when developing version 1.0 is building culture. You don’t get to...

Spam on the increase →
I’m glad I switched to filtering all my email through gmail. I now have 11467 messages in my spam folder. This is from 1pm 18 Jan 2008 to now. This is the most I’ve ever had and I don’t see any current reason for it to be likely to decrease. Good work Google.

Webstock '08 Review - Part 3 →
Information that’s hard to find is information that’s hardly found.
People search differently, according to Peter Morville when he talked on Ambient Findability and the Future of Search. Needs and prior knowledge differ. Websites are often badly designed for entering via search engine. (This blog is an example, with its categories.) People usually find things despite the website....

Meta-data: The revenge of the librarians
Thursday was the first day of the conference proper, and I started with the welcome. (My colleagues got a central table while I relaxed and enjoyed a latte over the road.) The first speaker was Nat Torkington talking about Design for the Future. It was a great presentation and if I hear he’s speaking again I’ll try to attend. I’d love to...

Design for the future. Today’s design is tomorrow’s legacy system.
I’m feeling buzzed from this week’s webstock conference. In addition to being a business analyst I’m very interested in design and usability. I started the conference with Scott Berkun’s The myths of innovation: How to lead breakthrough projects workshop on Tuesday. It was a suitable workshop...

Please click on this photo and see the photo large, I want to win a prize. It was part of Webstock and I thought our combination of t-shirts go well together. Hers says:
I am so going to blog about this.
Mine says:
More people have read this shirt than your blog. 0000002 I’ll write about my great experiences at Webstock after tomorrow’s presentations.

My roomba →
I got a Roomba today. I’ve wanted one for a while. I’ve given it a try and it picked up more cat hair than I thought was in the carpet. I still have to manually do the stairs. :(

Tax cuts →
Labour is promising tax cuts over the next few years. I wonder how I will see them?
As an increase in Working For Families? As further bonuses to student loan repayments? Increased funds into Kiwisaver? A decrease in tax paid while on parental leave? A drop in the lowest tax bracket, countered by raising the tax take from the “Rich pricks”? An across the board “chewing...

The Top Ten Things Environmentalists Need to Learn
10. Go after pollution sources with the highest benefit/cost ratio, not those which are most noticeable
9. It is always best and often vital to utilize existing infrastructure and capabilities when implementing new methods or technologies
8. “Natural”, “Organic” and “Bio” do not mean “good”
